Theory
ZnO is an n-type semiconductor where electrons in the valence band can absorb energy from UV light and undergo transitions, thereby absorbing UV light. When the particle size of ZnO is much smaller than the wavelength of UV light, it can scatter UV light in all directions, reducing the intensity of UV light in the direction of irradiation.
